{"id":6754,"date":"2017-05-26T09:05:21","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T23:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=6754"},"modified":"2017-05-12T12:09:19","modified_gmt":"2017-05-12T02:09:19","slug":"children-learning-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2017\/05\/children-learning-read\/","title":{"rendered":"Why support children learning to read?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came across this great infographic outlining why children need to be able to read.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being a good message in itself, the infographic also supports <a href=\"http:\/\/bukbilongpikinini.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buk Bilong Piknini<\/a>\u00a0(a charitable organisation funding books and reading programs for children in Papua New Guinea).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bukbilongpikinini.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6756 noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6756 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini.jpg\" alt=\"Buk Blong Pikinini Infographic about children reading\" width=\"480\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini.jpg 480w, https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini-120x300.jpg 120w, https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini-410x1024.jpg 410w, https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini-60x150.jpg 60w, https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/reading_help_children_bukbilongpikinini-252x630.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What do you think &#8211; why is it important we encourage children to learn to read, and then read some more?<\/p>\n<p>I would also encourage everyone to help ensure our children are literate &#8211; whether by <a href=\"http:\/\/bukbilongpikinini.org\/index.php\/helping\/donations\">donating to groups such as Buk Bilong Pikinini<\/a>, helping at schools or giving books as gifts, every bit helps.<\/p>\n<h2>Helping children learn to read<\/h2>\n<p>I frequently help at my children&#8217;s school by listening to children (usually not my own!) read and helping them build the skills of sounding out new words, ensuring the words make sense and getting a full understanding of what they are reading.<\/p>\n<h3>Why do I (and many others) help these children?<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>learning to read opens many opportunities for children &#8211; through learning, ideas and comprehension<\/li>\n<li>the sooner they learn to read, the easier other aspects of school become &#8211; delayed reading can limit other learning and become a downward spiral for education<\/li>\n<li>I love reading &#8211; books give me pleasure, ideas, an escape and relaxation &#8211; and I hope to share that pleasure with children<\/li>\n<li>all the children benefit by their classmates being able to read &#8211; teachers can concentrate on contact rather than reading if all students can read competently (for their age) and each child can contribute more ideas and experiences if they are well read<\/li>\n<li>seeing me place an importance of everyone being able to read, encourages all the children to value reading<\/li>\n<li>seeing people volunteer to help at school also teaches children about community spirit, generosity and being able to make positive change in small ways<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What have you done to help children (or adults for that matter) learn to read and enjoy reading?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across this great infographic outlining why children need to be able to read.
