{"id":6398,"date":"2014-02-07T12:43:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-07T01:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=6398"},"modified":"2014-02-12T13:59:05","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T02:59:05","slug":"get-the-details-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2014\/02\/get-the-details-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Get the details right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a details person?<\/p>\n<p>Many people are <a title=\"Details count\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2009\/03\/details-count\/\" target=\"_blank\">bored by details<\/a> (probably all of us really &#8211; we just like details in some things, not all things) and that includes <a title=\"grammar details for good writing\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/category\/grammar-details-2\" target=\"_blank\">details of grammar and good writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>You can&#8217;t convince me with poor attention to details<\/h2>\n<p>I received a letter a few days ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6409\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/letters.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6409\" class=\" wp-image-6409  \" alt=\"Images of sample letters from Word Constructions\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/letters.gif\" width=\"230\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A nicely presented letter has little value if the details in the letter are wrong.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I like getting letters, and it doesn&#8217;t happen as often now we have so many electronic options available to us. So it&#8217;s disappointing when the letter turns out to be spam or a scam rather than something interesting.<\/p>\n<p>This particular letter I recognised as spam straight away as I&#8217;ve received rubbish from this group before (and so have clients who luckily ask me if it is legitimate before acting).<\/p>\n<p>However, standing in the sun was nice so I actually read their letter and found numerous reasons to not act as they wished.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>they were using an <a title=\"Phone or email\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2009\/04\/phone-or-email\/\">email address<\/a> I have never used so obviously made it up &#8211; to convince me you are credible, use my real email address<\/li>\n<li>they missed the .au in my email and website addresses &#8211; and coming from an Australian company wanting to promote me in an Australian directory makes it even more pathetic to my mind. It wouldn&#8217;t take long to look at my website to discover the .au in the URL<\/li>\n<li>it was sent to my home address but addressed to Word Constructions &#8211; a detail that made me instantly suspicious anyway.<\/li>\n<li>paragraph one includes &#8220;This now includes additional subscriber benefits listed below&#8221; which is grammatically poor; paragraph three\u00a0includes &#8220;&#8230; entitle you to additional subscriber benefits (see below).&#8221;<br \/>\nHowever, the letter does not contain any subscriber benefits.<\/li>\n<li>a smaller detail is lack of consistency such as &#8220;The Internet reaches 15 million&#8230; (internet analysis&#8230;&#8221; (Internet or internet &#8211; they need to choose one and list that in a <a title=\"Style Guides\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/02\/style-guides\/\">style guide<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>multiple sentences were missing words or just didn&#8217;t make sense &#8211; one will be <a title=\"Business writing ideas susbcription page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordconstructions.com.au\/subscribe.php\" target=\"_blank\">discussed and improved in my March newsletter<\/a> I think!<\/li>\n<li>two sentences in a row &#8216;kindly&#8217; requested me to do something &#8211; is it kind of me to sign a form to (supposedly) get promotion via their directory?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>\u00a0Businesses need to watch the details<\/h2>\n<p>Get the details right and people are not distracted by the mistakes &#8211; meaning they can focus on your call to action or message.<br \/>\n[Tweet &#8220;Get the details right and people are not distracted by mistakes&#8221;]<br \/>\nGet the details wrong and people doubt your <a title=\"Being professional\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordconstructions.com.au\/articles\/business\/professional.html\" target=\"_blank\">professionalism<\/a> and worry\u00a0whether you pay attention to details when they are paying you. That is, if you throw together a letter instead of putting effort into every word of it, will you also rush through fixing my car, cutting my hair, building my house, designing my website and so on?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nice to think people will ignore\u00a0errors because we&#8217;re nice people with good intentions.<\/p>\n<p>But first impressions count and if those incorrect details are the first thing a potential customer sees, it can be enough to give your competitor the job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how does your business avoid errors in the details?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How does your business react to potential suppliers if they get details wrong?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a details person?
