{"id":5349,"date":"2013-01-07T09:24:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-06T22:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=5349"},"modified":"2013-03-15T10:59:09","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T23:59:09","slug":"28-young-drivers-killed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2013\/01\/28-young-drivers-killed\/","title":{"rendered":"28% young drivers killed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In 2007, 28% of Victorian drivers aged 18 &#8211; 25 were killed.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5353\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2013\/01\/28-young-drivers-killed\/car_crash_alochol_ambluance_kozzi\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5353\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5353\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5353\" alt=\"two crashed cars and an ambulance in front of a galss of whisky\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/car_crash_alochol_ambluance_kozzi.jpg\" width=\"218\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alcohol is a factor in the road toll, especially for young drivers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What a terrible statistic.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also pretty surprising &#8211; at\u00a030 June\u00a02006,\u00a0<a title=\"Victoria's young people\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eduweb.vic.gov.au\/edulibrary\/public\/govrel\/Policy\/children\/sovcreport07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">902,796 Victorians were aged 18 &#8211; 24<\/a>. 28% of that is 252,782.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian road toll in 2007 was 333.<\/p>\n<p>So I looked at a <a title=\"TAC for road safety in Victoria\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tacsafety.com.au\/campaigns\/young-drivers\" target=\"_blank\">Victorian Government website<\/a> and found this sentence:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Helvetica; color: #333333; font-size: small;\">While 18 to 25 year olds represent around 14% of licenced drivers, they accounted for approximately 28% of all drivers killed on Victoria&#8217;s roads.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>28% of the state road toll was 93. Awful to lose that many young people, but significantly better than losing 252,782 of them.<\/p>\n<h2>Checking meaning is important<\/h2>\n<p>That first sentence is perfectly acceptable in terms of <a title=\"Importance of words\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2009\/07\/importance-of-words\/\" target=\"_blank\">grammar and spelling<\/a>, and it makes sense when you read it.<\/p>\n<p>But the authors and editors of that text book (yes, I found\u00a0that sentence\u00a0in\u00a0my daughter&#8217;s\u00a0current VCE text book on health) didn&#8217;t check that the correct meaning was being communicated.<\/p>\n<p>There is a huge difference in meaning\u00a0between 28% of young drivers were killed and 28% of killed drivers were young.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhat detracts from the credibility of that text book, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Do you think I should read the entire book and check every fact they state, or assume it was a one-off?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kozzi images\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kozzi.com\/?ref=215815\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">* Image courtesy of kozzi<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2007, 28% of Victorian drivers aged 18 &#8211; 25 were killed.
