{"id":5208,"date":"2012-12-05T09:18:07","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T22:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=5208"},"modified":"2012-11-19T21:00:12","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T10:00:12","slug":"translate-transcript-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/12\/translate-transcript-style\/","title":{"rendered":"Translation and transcription styles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a writer and communications manager, <a title=\"Style Guides\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/02\/style-guides\/\" target=\"_blank\">style guides are important<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was only when I read a book by a freelance translator and transcriber, <a title=\"kris Emery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.KrisEmery.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kris Emery<\/a>, that I thought about style guides for other professionals dealing with words.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting written documents<\/h2>\n<p>If your business\u00a0need documents\u00a0translated or meetings transcribed, you are paying someone to give you a written document that will be used in some way.<a href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/transcribe_style.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5219\" title=\"transcribe_style\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/transcribe_style.gif\" alt=\"Transcribe and translate in style\" width=\"283\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So obviously you want that document to be prepared in a way that is easy for you to use.<\/p>\n<p>That could include details such as :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>being in your prefered font size so it&#8217;s easy for you to read and manage<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Poor spelling impacts on your content\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/02\/poor-spelling-impacts-on-your-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">spelling certain\u00a0words in a particular way <\/a>&#8211; it could be <a title=\"eBooks from Word Constructions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordconstructions.com.au\/ebook.php\" target=\"_blank\">ebook\u00a0vs eBook<\/a>\u00a0or it could be how you want your business or product name represented (think of AvSuper, McDonalds and WordPress for instance)<\/li>\n<li>putting meeting records into columns to separate names from conversations<\/li>\n<li>location of your logo &#8211; you could add it yourself, but why not get the document ready for use?<\/li>\n<li>having page numbers or preparation dates\u00a0in a certain place on each page<\/li>\n<li>things to exclude from a transcription (eg remove um, ah and y&#8217;know\u00a0but leave uhuh)<\/li>\n<li>page margins or text justification that suits your needs, such as fitting onto a letterhead or space for notes around the text<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Preparing a style guide<\/h2>\n<p>You have a number of options really&#8230;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>rely on the person just to translate\/transcribe and change the style yourself<\/li>\n<li>assume the person will give you a nice format without guidance and just fix the rest &#8211; or get lucky and find someone who will ask the questions to give what you want (and probably write a style guide themselves to use when they next work with you &#8211; expect to pay for it if you want access to that style guide yourself)<\/li>\n<li>provide a template and hope the person doesn&#8217;t adjust it or any coding behind it<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Starting your style guide\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/starting-your-style-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">provide a style guide<\/a> (or at least a style sheet if your requirements are few) for them to work from<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A document-specific\u00a0style guide will by nature be about details, lots of little details that add up to a polished and useful end result.<\/p>\n<p>It can be pulled together in\u00a0two hours or so if you have an existing document to work from; faster if you have a style template to work from.
