Homonyms are words or phrases that sound alike but have very different meanings, such as <a title=\"there, their or they\u2019re?\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/03\/there-their-or-theyre\/\">there\/their\/they&#8217;re<\/a> and <a title=\"You\u2019re from the days of yore?\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/07\/youre-from-the-days-of-yore\/\">your\/you&#8217;re\/yore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>100,000 opportunities to give a meaning you didn&#8217;t intend.<\/p>\n<p>In business writing, we can look unprofessional or ignorant to use the\u00a0wrong word. In aviation, we can say the wrong word and result in a major crash.<\/p>\n<p>Although the consequences may not be as dire when writing, just an awareness of how easy it can be to make mistakes in English can remind us to proof read and <a title=\"The rewards of hiring a business writer\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2011\/07\/the-rewards-of-hiring-a-business-writer\/\">get help with our communications<\/a>. And take the time to learn how to spell various homonyms.<\/p>\n<p>People\u00a0working in aviation are given training in English\u00a0and \u00a0former Emirates head of human factors, Surendra\u00a0Ratwatte, adds that such training should be given to native-English speakers as well.
