{"id":4599,"date":"2012-08-03T10:35:26","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T00:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=4599"},"modified":"2012-08-03T15:36:11","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T05:36:11","slug":"setting-rules-for-guest-posts-on-your-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/08\/setting-rules-for-guest-posts-on-your-blog\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting rules for guest posts on your blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I have just started using guest bloggers on this blog (see <a title=\"How to get your customers to speak up\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/08\/get-customers-to-speak-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karol&#8217;s post from yesterday<\/a> as an example), it seemed timely to discuss how you establish <a title=\"Blog policies for Word Constructions\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/blog-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\">guidelines for your guest bloggers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why have guest blogger guidelines?<\/h2>\n<p>Every blog is different &#8211; as are all the bloggers &#8211; which means two things.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>to keep your blog <a title=\"Style Guides\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/02\/style-guides\/\">focussed on your brand and style<\/a>, you need to define how that happens<\/li>\n<li>not all bloggers will have the same high standards as you\u00a0 so don&#8217;t assume any guest blogger will behave professionally or within your style<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Guidelines for guest bloggers helps maintain your blog. <a title=\"Blog policies\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/04\/blog-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Publicly available policies or guidelines<\/a>\u00a0will also reduce the number of\u00a0blog posts you receive that don&#8217;t meet your rules.<\/p>\n<h2>What goes into guest blogger guidelines?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, the short answer is &#8216;that&#8217;s up to you &#8211; it&#8217;s your blog!&#8217;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4603\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/blog_guidelines.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4603\" class=\" wp-image-4603\" title=\"blog_guidelines\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/blog_guidelines.gif\" alt=\"rules &amp; guidelines for blogs\" width=\"205\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fun or formal, long or short, guidelines are handy&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But I&#8217;m guessing you want a more detailed answer so here are some important points to consider &#8211; you may or may not list all of them for bloggers to see but it&#8217;s good to have considered each one relative to your blog.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>length of posts &#8211; minimums and maximums<\/li>\n<li>unique content vs reused content &#8211; including how long after you publish the post can it be used<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Recognising an ineffective guest blog post\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/03\/recognising-ineffective-guest-blog-posts\/\">standard of writing<\/a> &#8211; is average acceptable or do you want great?<\/li>\n<li>standard of content &#8211; is it correct and up-to-date? Does it give something new or just spout motherhood statements?<\/li>\n<li>copyright and ownership &#8211; be sure the blogger has the right to offer you the post and any accompanying images<\/li>\n<li>how many <a title=\"Blog post linking\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/04\/linking-from-blog-posts\/\">links can be included in the post<\/a>? in the bio box?<\/li>\n<li>how long is their bio? will it be shown and can it include images?<\/li>\n<li>do posts have to be informative rather than an ad for someone else?<\/li>\n<li>can <a title=\"understanding affiliate selling programs\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/articles\/business\/affiliatesell.html\" target=\"_blank\">affiliate links<\/a> be included?<\/li>\n<li>what type of content do you want (or not want)? For instance, <a title=\"Top lists - when to get a professional writer's help\" href=\"http:\/\/www.toplistsonline.com\/business\/top-6-times-business-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\">toplists<\/a>\u00a0only takes lists and other sites don&#8217;t want reviews<\/li>\n<li>what topics do you want (or not want) covered? Does it have to be something not covered before in your blog?<\/li>\n<li>will links get a dofollow or nofollow attribute?<\/li>\n<li>what promotion do you expect from the guest blogger?<\/li>\n<li>do you expect the guest blogger to visit your site and <a title=\"Replying to blog comments\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/03\/replying-to-blog-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\">respond to comments<\/a>? it&#8217;s in their best interests to do so but many don&#8217;t<\/li>\n<li>are there suitability factors such as no adult concepts or no swearing?<\/li>\n<li>how often will you post something by the same person?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Which ones do you include in your guest blogger policy (even if it is an unwritten policy so far!)?<\/p>\n<p>Did anything on that list make you\u00a0say &#8220;Oh, that&#8217;s a good idea!&#8221; and get you thinking?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll post more about hosting guest blog posts soon, but let me know if you have specific questions&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I have just started using guest bloggers on this blog (see Karol&#8217;s post from yesterday as an example), it seemed timely to discuss how you establish guidelines for your guest bloggers.
