{"id":4378,"date":"2012-07-05T05:31:47","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T19:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=4378"},"modified":"2012-07-03T20:36:11","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T10:36:11","slug":"make-your-website-more-accessible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/07\/make-your-website-more-accessible\/","title":{"rendered":"Make your website more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from the Canadian court case and <a title=\"Why should your website be more accessible?\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/07\/why-should-your-website-be-more-accessible\/\">why accessible websites are a good objective<\/a>, it&#8217;s time to share idea on how to make site accessible.<\/p>\n<h2>Principles of accessible websites<a href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/computer_access_aspects.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4382\" title=\"computer_access_aspects\" src=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/computer_access_aspects.gif\" alt=\"Add access to keyboards and internet\" width=\"315\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>According to <a title=\"WebAIM introduction\" href=\"http:\/\/webaim.org\/intro\/\" target=\"_blank\">WebAIM (Web accessibility in mind)<\/a>, the key aspects of an accessible site are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>appropriate alternative text (ie alt tags for images and graphics)<\/li>\n<li>headings for data tables (ie appropriate table headers in the code, using &lt;th&gt;, not just titles in columns and rows)<\/li>\n<li>ensure forms have labels for every field (ie use <label>\u00a0<\/label><label> tags) and enable recovery from errors (ie say what the error is and let them try again without having to complete all fields again)<\/label><\/li>\n<li>use <a title=\"Making links useful\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2008\/04\/making-links-useful\/\">meaningful text for links<\/a> so they can be used out of context (ie don&#8217;t use &#8216;click here&#8217; and &#8216;read more&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>add captions and transcripts for audio materials (including videos)<\/li>\n<li>make attachments (eg a pdf, doc or Powerpoint document) accessible too or convert them into an html format<\/li>\n<li>enable people to skip repeated content (such as navigation menus that are on every page)<\/li>\n<li>don&#8217;t rely on colour or font changes to convey meaning<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Impressive words don\u2019t\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2012\/03\/impressive-words-dont\/\">make content clear and easy to read<\/a><\/li>\n<li>be careful with the use of JavaScript &#8211; make it usable without a mouse and make pages work without JavaScript<\/li>\n<li>design to w3c standards &#8211; CSS sheets help readers separate out presentation details from the content; html pages are easier and actually more SEO effective<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>\u00a0Following these principles<\/h2>\n<p>Making your website accessible makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>The principles are fairly simple and non-expensive to follow. I know I adhere strongly to some of them &#8211; and others I just didn&#8217;t know or think about. And some aren&#8217;t so relevant (for instance, I don&#8217;t use JavaScript on my site).<\/p>\n<p>Which of these principles do you follow all the time? Which did you not realise were possible or an issue?<\/p>\n<p>I know it will take me a bit of time, but I am going to work my way through that list (well, the ones I haven&#8217;t done in the past) so I can learn how they work and implement them. Starting with form labels and table headers as I didn&#8217;t know these existed before now.<\/p>\n<p>As I learn more, I will share that knowledge &#8211; the more awareness we share, the more we can make the internet accessible and inclusive.
