{"id":217,"date":"2007-11-08T10:52:08","date_gmt":"2007-11-08T00:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2007\/11\/quotation-marks\/"},"modified":"2011-02-09T15:27:25","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T04:27:25","slug":"quotation-marks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2007\/11\/quotation-marks\/","title":{"rendered":"Quotation marks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever noticed how many unnecessary quotation marks are used?<\/p>\n<p>I once wrote the following as a guest blogger:<\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Quotation marks seem to be fashionable at the moment, which is a shame as they are being used so badly! <\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8220;Recommended by doctors and mothers&#8221; makes me feel like they are telling me a lie &#8211; if it is a genuine statement, why does it need to be in quotation marks?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Quotation marks are correctly used to:<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8211; indicate you are quoting someone<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8211; indicate speech (e.g. He said &#8220;How are you?&#8221;)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8211; present a title of something<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8211; show the text lacks credibility or truth, or at least is not verifiable\u00a0(e.g. The media release stated the product was &#8220;superior&#8221;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">If you are tempted to use quotation marks for emphasis, try bold, italics, underline, colour, indenting or size of font instead &#8211; it will stand out more and not send any incorrect messages!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So I was rather amused when I came across a <a href=\"http:\/\/quotation-marks.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog dedicated to silly use of quotation marks<\/a>.
