{"id":1445,"date":"2011-01-15T14:26:03","date_gmt":"2011-01-15T03:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/?p=1445"},"modified":"2011-02-04T14:42:25","modified_gmt":"2011-02-04T03:42:25","slug":"use-real-keywords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2011\/01\/use-real-keywords\/","title":{"rendered":"Use real keywords"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keywords are used to help search engines relate your web pages to terms people use in the search engines.<\/p>\n<p>So if you sell books, you want search engines to find you when people look for a book shop they can access so you could <a title=\"over use of keywords\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2009\/06\/over-using-keywords-in-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\">use keywords<\/a> like books, reading, store, fiction and non-fiction. Keywords like bike, engineer, beautician and plumber would be less useful (unless you specialised in books about those things!)<\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s really important to use real keywords, too. By that I mean words that real people will use to find your goods or services, not jargon or unusual alternatives of words.<\/p>\n<p>Terms like motor insurance, pertusiss and\u00a0downhaul are actually accurate but used by professionals &#8211; most people refer to car insurance, whooping cough and (sail) rope so they are the real keywords.<\/p>\n<p>Worse are words used in a different context, such as benefit. Most of us think of benefit as an advantage whereas the insurance and super industries\u00a0use benefit as the money you may be entitled to; would you ever type &#8216;super benefit&#8217; in a search engine to find out about superannuation?<\/p>\n<p>So when preparing your <a title=\"web friendly content\" href=\"http:\/\/wordconstructions.com.au\/blog\/2010\/02\/making-content-web-friendly\/\">website copy<\/a> and metadata (meaning the text you can add to a webpage for search engines to use), make sure you focus on words your customers will use rather than words people in your industry use.
