That's especially important if people would search for you site via those technical words, I think.

I'm generally a big hater of jargon.

Where I work I hear a lot of terms that in no way are better than normal words would be.

However when it comes to sites and search engines, maybe chucking in some technical words would help people find your site.

I want to encourage people to work on their family trees, not scare them to death.

It may not be encouraging to work on family trees for everyone, but the concept is spot on. Thanks for adding your comment :)

I have a genealogy website. Some of my articles explain research methods, various documents one might use, how to find documents, and so forth. Many of my readers are beginning their family trees. I cannot assume that everyone who reads my articles and blog posts understands the terminology. It's better to use as little jargon as possible. But, when it is necessary, it's important to define it so as not to frustrate or intimidate readers. I want to encourage people to work on their family trees, not scare them to death. It might be possible in a website setting to include a page dedicated to definitions that a reader could refer to from time to time.

Thanks for adding that, Zargranios - it isn't just in blog posts and articles that headings matter.

This is good information for web writers. The heading is what lures people in. If your heading isn't informative and catchy, the reader may move on without reading or clicking on other articles. If it's too vague, they may be disappointed when they view the page and find it's not what they thought.

Thank you for showing the examples of how we can write headings differently. Often, two or three words can make a difference.

Yes, it can be hard, that's the reason why there is a whole career based on this (well not only on this), but on advertising..
In advertising, a good heading can be crucial for posible consumers to buy your product.

An article on how to look at search stats? Not something I consider myself an expert on but I could certainly write about what I do know :) Stay tuned!
