I think words with symbols in the middle look horrible and break the flow. I just list it as an option - I don't see this done as often now as it was 3 years ago. But I guess if the rest of the message is legitimate, the person might just assume it's a typo (or if they're in the know, they might understand you are trying to get through the spam filter).
